Newsletter 11/30/18

We are SUPER READERS!  What a big week we had in Reading Workshop!  We finished our lessons by perfecting our reading voices: looking for punctuation and character feelings and reading with a matching tone in our voices.  Then we learned our last super power- Book Talk Power!  We can introduce our book to our partner before we read it. If we're familiar with a story, we can find the "big idea" and introduce it by saying something like, "This book is called___ and it's all about ___".
We practiced with our peers.  Finally, we met Super Reader himself!!! See the other post for more info.

We published our "Show and Tell" stories this week!  We chose our piece and edited all week.  Instead of displaying our finished work in the hallway, we are the featured authors on our theme shelf!  Now we can read one another's books!  Woah!

In math, we extended the concept of how greater numbers can be broken up into lesser numbers.  We played "Pass the Counters, Please" with friends.  One friend had 5 counters, and another asked for a few.  Then a third had to guess how many were left.  We had these hands on experiences and then drew our findings  (see below).

We also did another Exemplar.  If John has 4 bicycles, how many tires does he have?  We worked individually to solve the problem then met together as a group to compare strategies.  We learned the math words diagram and pair.

In Second Steps we learned what it means to be assertive.  This is a word we use quite often.  When I don't know what to do, how can I help myself?  Ask your child.

In science, we noticed that the tree outside our window no longer looks like it did in September.  We observed and recorded the differences.  We also collected all of November's weather data.
News and Notes:
  • thank you for sending back your child's rough draft folder and tradition candle. We are still waiting for a few more.
  • thank you for sending in pajamas for our collection!  We have collected 17 pairs. The due date for pajamas is next Wednesday, 12/15.
