Super Reader Visits!

Super Reader visited today! We got an invitation to meet him in in Common Room with all the other K classes and then he was there!   He presented us with certificates because we have finished our training.  Ask your child all about it.

We are all SUPER READERS!

We are SUPER READERS!  What a big week we had in Reading Workshop!  We finished our lessons by perfecting our reading voices: looking for punctuation and character feelings and reading with a matching tone in our voices.  Then we learned our last super power- Book Talk Power!  We can introduce our book to our partner before we read it. If we're familiar with a story, we can find the "big idea" and introduce it by saying something like, "This book is called___ and it's all about ___".
We practiced with our peers.  Finally, we met Super Reader himself!!! See the other post for more info.

We published our "Show and Tell" stories this week!  We chose our piece and edited all week.  Instead of displaying our finished work in the hallway, we are the featured authors on our theme shelf!  Now we can read one another's books!  Woah!

In math, we extended the concept of how greater numbers can be broken up into lesser numbers.  We played "Pass the Counters, Please" with friends.  One friend had 5 counters, and another asked for a few.  Then a third had to guess how many were left.  We had these hands on experiences and then drew our findings  (see below).

We also did another Exemplar.  If John has 4 bicycles, how many tires does he have?  We worked individually to solve the problem then met together as a group to compare strategies.  We learned the math words diagram and pair.

In Second Steps we learned what it means to be assertive.  This is a word we use quite often.  When I don't know what to do, how can I help myself?  Ask your child.

In science, we noticed that the tree outside our window no longer looks like it did in September.  We observed and recorded the differences.  We also collected all of November's weather data.
News and Notes:
  • thank you for sending back your child's rough draft folder and tradition candle. We are still waiting for a few more.
  • thank you for sending in pajamas for our collection!  We have collected 17 pairs. The due date for pajamas is next Wednesday, 12/15.

In math this week, we had a hands on experience building numbers 2-5 different ways.

In Reading Workshop, we strengthened our Super Powers with new paper books, recognizing the same sight words, but in new texts.

We wrote about our Thanksgiving plans, trying to remember to use spaces between our words.

In our social studies lessons, we celebrated our feast and made Thanksgiving cards with our 5th Grade Buddies!  We also discussed how we can best prepare for our new student, Finley, who is joining our class on Monday.  We are all prepared to be helpful friends!

We worked on increasing our fluency in Reading Workshop this week.  It's ok to read a book slowly the first time, but the more we read, the smoother our voice should sound.  We searched for word patterns on the pages, because if we recognize a pattern within the text, we can be more fluent while reading.  Challenge your child to read his/her paper books at home with a fluent voice.

We can also write pattern books!  We are using our knowledge of sight words to write sentences that are a pattern (i.e. "Look at the..." or "I can...").  When we write patterns and sight words, we can write so much more!  We are making a book factory in our room!

We also found patterns in math!  We made Thanksgiving patterns and searched for patterns around the room.  We also finished our chapter on ordering by size, length and weight.  Now we are working on composing and decomposing 5.  We are noticing various ways to make the same number.  One and four make five and so does three and two, etc.

We spent a lot of time learning about Native Americans and preparing for our feast next Tuesday.  We learned a bit about the what happened when the pilgrims came over from England.  We listened to Native American music while working, and enjoyed watching tribal dances.  Then we formed our own tribe and gave our selves Native American names.

News and Notes:

  • Please let me know if your child will be leaving school early next week
  • Please let me know if you wish your child to have his/her picture retaken on MONDAY

We learned all of our super powers in Reading Workshop this week and we are doing so well as readers!  We reflected on our strengths and we made goals for the future.  Everyone identified their weakest super power (the one they use the least) and then we wrote it on a "super power cuff" to wear on our wrist while reading.  This cuff gives us a super reminder to exercise that power!  See photos below.

Our read aloud for the week was Sheila Rae the Brave by Kevin Henkes.  Ask your child about her adventure with her sister.

In Writer's Workshop, we learned how to talk about our writing.  Some of our 5th Grade Buddies came to hear us.  See the anchor chart below to see how we formed our conversations.  This was hard work.  We're not used to speaking about our work, but it's what authors do, so we're working on it.  We also practiced writing sentences with "finger spaces".

In math this week we used new vocabulary while ordering and matching objects.  We used words like "taller", "shorter", "longest" and "shortest".  Look for opportunities to use these words at home.

We had an amazing scientist visit the school this week as well as Cole's grandfather, Mr. Sloat, who is a veteran.  We made cards for the veteran visitors and enjoyed asking Mr. Sloat our questions.

News and Notes:
  • Next week we will be forming our "tribe" for our Kindergarten Thanksgiving Feast which will be the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.  We'll be working hard on costumes, etc.  Please note: due to space constraints, the feast is for students only.  Look for information coming home next week.

Wow!  We learned a lot of sight words this week!  We are spelling them, reading them and writing them!  In Readers Workshop we learned how to sit back to back and hip to hip with our reading partners.  We learned how partners treat one another, giving our focus to our friend, putting down anything that may be distracting.  Partners say kind things like "Should we talk about your book first?".  We'll be working on being a respectful, helpful partner all year.

We wrote all about Halloween this week, and then we went back into our Show and Tell books.  We learned how to write sentences!  Everyone was SO excited to use our knowledge of sight words to build sentences- no need to stress!  We are brave spellers!

We did another problem solving Exemplar this week and we learned what a diagram is.  We made a diagram to help us solve the problem.  We are also comparing items by size, using the words "smallest", "middle-sized" and "biggest".  The story The Three Bears helped!

We continued our study of severe weather this week, learning about how a meteorologist's forecast helps everyone prepare for severe weather.  We also noticed a change in the weather when we gathered October's weather data.

Thank you for coming to our Halloween Parade!  We also had a special Halloween Kindergarten Exchange that afternoon where we mixed up our K classes and did fun Halloween activities in each classroom.  Officer Dan came to talk to us about Halloween safety.

News and Notes:
  • Next Thursday the Ox Ridge Kindergarten will sing at the Veteran's Breakfast.  Please dress your child in red, white and blue next Thursday.  Remember that this event is for veterans and their families only.
  • November Scholastic orders are due next Thursday.
  • No School on Tuesday 11/6.  Please consider taking your child with you when you vote!  It is a great lesson in civics.
