Newsletter 11/16/18

We worked on increasing our fluency in Reading Workshop this week.  It's ok to read a book slowly the first time, but the more we read, the smoother our voice should sound.  We searched for word patterns on the pages, because if we recognize a pattern within the text, we can be more fluent while reading.  Challenge your child to read his/her paper books at home with a fluent voice.

We can also write pattern books!  We are using our knowledge of sight words to write sentences that are a pattern (i.e. "Look at the..." or "I can...").  When we write patterns and sight words, we can write so much more!  We are making a book factory in our room!

We also found patterns in math!  We made Thanksgiving patterns and searched for patterns around the room.  We also finished our chapter on ordering by size, length and weight.  Now we are working on composing and decomposing 5.  We are noticing various ways to make the same number.  One and four make five and so does three and two, etc.

We spent a lot of time learning about Native Americans and preparing for our feast next Tuesday.  We learned a bit about the what happened when the pilgrims came over from England.  We listened to Native American music while working, and enjoyed watching tribal dances.  Then we formed our own tribe and gave our selves Native American names.
