Newsletter 3/1

We did all things Seuss this week!  We read as many Seuss stories as we could, and we noted some things about Seuss' writing craft.  He likes to be silly, create imaginary animals/things, and rhyme.  Seuss also writes books that teach readers lessons, like Yertle the Turtle and The Lorax.  We collected data on which was our class favorite, and most students like Green Eggs and Ham.  We made Seuss hats, played Seuss games, did Seuss puzzles, and read his biography.  Did you know that he wasn't a real doctor?

We finished our Geometry unit this week and reviewed all the names of solid and flat shapes.  We also reviewed teens.  We played games to review these concepts on Friday.  We made wonderful pictures out of flat shapes, which are displayed for you to see in our hallway.

In Reading Workshop, we learned that reading nonfiction is a lot like reading fiction.  Readers look closely, point to the pictures to notice things, and ask questions.  We asked A LOT of questions this week.  We can ask questions that start with "I wonder why...", "Where does...", and "What is...".  Readers are always WONDERING about their topics!

We began writing our All About Books in Writers Workshop!  We made a list of possible topics about which we are experts.  Ask your child about his/her plan!  We sketched out our plan for what we would teach on each page.

We finished our Pushes and Pulls unit in science this week with a super fun engineering opportunity.  What would you do if there was a big boulder going to roll down a hillside toward a village- and you were the engineer hired to keep the villagers safe?  We learned that PUSHES can change an object's direction.  Check out the fun photos below!
