Newsletter 3/24/16

Look at what we've been up to in work and play this week!

In Reading Workshop this week we reviewed retelling and making connections with nonfiction texts.  We also read a tricky poem about eggs.  In phonics, we focused on letter Ee, sorting words that begin with the long and short Ee sounds.  We are blending and segmenting sounds every day!

We focused on partnering in Writing Workshop this week.  We have new writing partners!  We learned how a partner can help a writer clarify a friend’s how-to story by acting it out.  We talked about what a helpful partner does and says.

We did a lot of egg and bunny counting this week!  We reviewed number identification and formation 1-20.

Welcome spring!  Our science lessons were about the new season this week.  We read spring stories, made a spring word web and watched our classroom thermometer change from blue to green!  We went outside and decorated with chalk to celebrate.

In Second Steps this week we learned tricks to help us wait.  We read Waiting Is Not Easy, by Mo Williams- a favorite Elephant and Piggie book!  Ask your child what s/he does to make waiting a bit easier.  We practiced this week!

Book buddy bags are due on Monday.
Monday 11:30 early dismissal.  No lunch in school!

Newsletter 3/18/16

In Reading Workshop this week we learned what to do when we come across a new vocabulary word while reading nonfiction.  We can usually figure out what a word means by looking at the picture or looking at the words around it (context clues)

We began writing our first “How To” piece in Writing Workshop this week, after examining some model texts.  We noticed that How Tos have numbered steps, so we are writing ours the same way!  We learned to plan our steps across our fingers.

In our handwriting lessons this week, we learned how to make an “h” and then turn it into a “b”!  Don’t pick up your pencil!

Do you believe in leprechauns?  WE DO!  We learned about St. Patrick’s Day this week and we had fun discussing Irish folktales and traditions, and listening to Irish music!  But the best was finding the GOLD and green footprints a leprechaun left in our classroom! Wow!

In math, we continue to build numbers 1-10 in various ways, using different tools.

The Darien Nature Center visited us this week and taught us about what animals do at the end of winter.
